Monroe College Volleyball Goes 2-1 as in Monroe College Invitational

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe Athletic Complex was a beehive of activity this weekend as the volleyball team hosted the annual Monroe College Invitational. The five-team, two-day tournament saw the Mustangs play three times, earning a pair of three-set wins over Potomac State College and Northern Virginia Community College, before losing the final match to Catawba Valley.

The Mustangs opened the tournament with a three-set win over Potomac State College. The scores were 25-13, 25-18, and 25-17. Monroe earned the victory through their strong serving and terrific passing. Neysha Gonzalez had 19 digs and three service aces. Carla Soufront picked up a match-best 31 assists. Kathrin Pasel recorded a dozen kills, while Cristen Coryatt had ten. 

On Saturday, Monroe opened with a 3-0 win over Northern Virginia. The scores were 25-10, 25-10 and 25-11. Coryatt earned another double-double, with 11 digs and ten kills, while Gabriella Nobrega had 14 assists. The team managed 13 service aces.

The final match was hard-fought, but saw Monroe fall by scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-22. Soufront dished out 22 assists, and Gonzalez earned 13 digs.

The Monroe College volleyball team will return to action on Tuesday, September 27th, hosting Queensborough Community College at 6:00 PM.
