NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College women’s soccer team continued its excellent start to the season with a 10-0 blanking of the previously unbeaten Brookdale Community College, 10-0, in the home opener for the Mustangs on Tuesday. The team is off to a 3-0 record and has outscored its opponents 29-0.
Monroe got on the board in the 12th minute when Brooke Smith brought the ball down the left side of the 18-yard box and put the ball into the middle for Elysa Virella, who scored. The Mustangs dominated possession for the first 30 minutes, not allowing the Jersey Blues to mount any scoring chances.
The score went to 2-0 off a corner kick when Virella played the ball into the box, and Marta Turmo jumped, got her head on it, and buried it in the back of the net. About eight minutes later, Andrea Rodriguez connected with Maia Williams for another score.
Bruna Tavarez scored her first goal of the match in the 36th minute, when she won possession at midfield, sprinted down the right side, and beat the keeper. Her second marker came shortly thereafter, off a feed from Smith. Monroe led 5-0 at the half.
Tavarez completed her hat trick nearly four minutes into the second half, when she scored off a pass from Gemma Pla, bringing the score to 6-0. Just before the hour mark, Monroe went up to 7-0 when Rodriguez fed Williams for her second goal of the game. Ten minutes later, Rodriguez scored when she blasted a shot off the far post and into the back of the net to make the score 8-0.
The final two markers came when Rodriguez scored off an assist from Kathleen Silva and Gema Fernandez scored off a rebound of a missed shot. The Mustangs won 10-0.
