NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle Womens Volleyball team split its pair of games Saturday afternoon at the Montclair State University tri-match. CNR defeated Brooklyn College 3-0, but later fell to the hosts 3-0. The Blue Angels now stand at 2-4 on the season, while Brooklyn drops to 3-12 and Montclair improves to 12-2 with a sweep of both teams.
CNR rolled in its opening game over the Bulldogs. The Blue Angels won 25-17, 25-13, and 25-16. Freshmen Imani Debose (Carson, CA) led CNR with 11 kills, while junior Tamara Beckford (Bronx, NY) added eight kills. Senior Melanie Ann Lopez Soto (Gurabo, PR) finished the match with 21 assists, while on defense freshmen Brianna Garcia (San Juan, PR) ended with eight digs.
In the 2nd match, CNR fell by scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-14. The key moment of the game was at 19-19. After that CNR couldn’t stop Montclair’s Hayley Merrill who picked up three points down the stretch to give CNR the early lead.
In this game, freshmen Cristal Liciaga (San Juan, PR) led CNR with 11 kills. Lopez Soto finished with a team-high 26 assists. The big difference in the match appeared to be at the net where Montclair dominated with 9 blocks to CNR’s one. Each team was solid on the floor defensively, with Garcia leading a pack of Angels with digs. She had eight.
CNR returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to the United States Merchant Marine Academy for a non-conference match.
