NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The College of New Rochelle Mens Soccer team claimed the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title Monday night after a 5-0 shutout victory over Vaughn College. The win gave CNR a clean sheet in conference play, ending 8-0 on the season. Vaughn’s season comes to a close with a 3-5 mark in the league.
CNR (14-2 overall) earns the top seed in the upcoming HVIAC Championship, held at Albany Pharmacy College. CNR will play the 4th seed Berkeley College on Saturday night at 7:30pm. The other semifinal will feature the 2nd seed hosts against 3rd seeded SUNY-ESF. The finals are on Sunday at 3pm.
Freshmen Jovanni Garcia (Garden Grove, CA) finished the night with his 3rd hat trick of the season and freshmenOscar Guido (Kendall, FL) recorded his first career multi-goal game, tallying the other two scores for CNR, both in the 2nd half.
Garcia scored the first goal of the night – his 6th game winner – off a feed from freshmen Cesar Rodriguez (Santa Ana, CA). Moments later, sophomore Nicorey Warren (Brooklyn, NY) was taken down in the box and Garcia converted the PK to make it 2-0.
The second half the Blue Angels were in prime form as they moved the ball effectively and were dangerous in the final third, while the defense remained solid. Guido scored both goals on feeds from freshmen Gabriel Lopez (Madrid, Spain), his 8th and 9th helpers of the season. Garcia added an unassisted goal to wrap up the scoring in the 74th minute. It was his 27th of the season.
Freshmen Cristian Perez Del Castillo (Harrison, NY) recorded his 6th straight shutout, making one save on the night. The CNR defense allowed just one shot the whole contest. The Blue Angels have now went 590 minutes without being scored on.
