Monroe Volleyball Goes 1-3 in Catawba Valley Tournament

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College Volleyball team posted a 1-3 record in the Catawba Valley College Tournament over the weekend. The Mustangs defeated Spartanburg Methodist College 3-0, but fell to Wallace State CC (3-0), Catawba Valley CC (3-1), and Owens CC (3-0).

The Mustangs opened play with a 3-0 loss against Wallace State. The set scores were 25-18, 25-16, and 25-13.  Carla Soufront had 21 assists, while Neysha Gonzalez led the team with 13 digs.

The second match was a rematch with Catawba Valley, to whom the Mustangs fell earlier in the season during a home game.  Monroe lost the match, 3-1.  They lost the first set, 25-18, took the second set 25-19, and dropped the last two, 25-14 and 25-18.  Cristen Coryatt paced the team with a dozen kills and eight digs.  Soufront posted 27 assists.

The third game saw Monroe defeat Spartanburg Methodist by scores of 25-12, 25-17, and 25-13.  Coryatt had 12 kills in the match, while Karen Souza managed four blocks.

The final match saw the Mustangs fall to Owens, 25-18, 25-17, and 28-26.  The third set was a back-and-forth battle that came down to the end.  Gonzalez led the team with 20 digs, while Coryatt had a double-double with ten kills and ten digs.

The Monroe College volleyball team is now 13-10 on the year.  They will return to action on Tuesday, October 11th, hosting Mercy College at 7:00 PM.
