Iona MXC Finishes 10th at 2016 NCAA Championship

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College men’s cross country team finished 10th overall at the 2016 NCAA Division Championship held at LaVern Gibson XC Course. It was the Gaels 14th Top 10 finish at the national championship in the last 15 years. All five scorers finished within 32 seconds of each other, the smallest spread among the first 20 teams in the standings.

Senior Kieran Clements was Iona’s top finisher in 44th place, good for a 34 on the team score. He completed the 10,000-meter event in 30:30.2. Junior Chartt Miller was 64th overall (50 team score) just over eight seconds later (30:38.4). Junior Gilbert Kirui challenged lead pack early but crossed the line in 87th place (30:47.2). Junior Johannes Motschmann crossed six spots and 2.7 seconds later. Sophomore Liam Dee was Iona’s fifth scorer in 117th place (93 team score, 31:01.3).

Villanova senior Patrick Tiernan was the individual champion, edging Syracuse’s Justyn Knight for the title. Oregon’s Edward Cheserek was third, ending his chances at a fourth-straight individual crown. No. 1 Northern Arizona was the team champion. Stanford, Syracuse, Mississippi, Arkansas, Colorado, BYU, Wisconsin, Oregon and Iona rounded out the Top 10.
