NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Senior Rodney Samson Jr. had a tremendous season as a running back, but his play at outside linebacker won him the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year Award for the Catholic High School Football League.
Samson Jr. played a major factor this season in helping the Gaels win the CHSFL “AA” Championship over Holy Trinity. The senior was a force at his outside linebacker position and led a defense that pitched three consecutive shutout wins against St. Francis Prep, Fordham Prep and Xavier.
The Gaels defense also had a great game against Holy Trinity in the championship game, limiting its opponent to only 14 points. The championship game was a highlight reel for Samson Jr., who had 220 total yards on offense, 8.5 tackles and a sack.
