NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A strong indoor season for the Women’s Track and Field team culminated in five podium finishes at the NJCAA National Championship last weekend.
The Mustangs received five All-American awards and one championship title during the competition. Zakiya Denoon, Track Athlete of the Year in the Atlantic Region, defended her championship in the 200m dash, setting a new school record with a time of 23.57. In addition, Denoon sprinted to the finish line in 3rd place in the 60m final with a time of 7.38. Teammate Tristan Evelyn clocked 7.49 and placed 6th overall in the 60m final.
The team also demonstrated a strong effort in the middle distance races. In the mile, Jemima Backman pushed through her last lap and finished 4th overall with an indoor personal best of 5:10.99. In the 800m final, Dawnel Collymore took the lead and gained All-American status after crossing the finish line in 5th place. Collymore clocked an indoor personal best of 2:16.85, while Backman crossed the finish line in 9th place within an hour of finishing the mile run.
Tashay Roberts also stepped it up at Nationals. Roberts ran a new personal best and school record of 1:36.60 in the 600m. She placed 10th overall, due to a tough standard in this year’s middle distance races.
