NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The College of New Rochelle (CNR) will host the Hospice Foundation of America’s annual Living With Grief® Teleconference. The program, broadcast live from Washington, D.C., will be presented on Tuesday, May 2, in Maura Hall Living Room on the New Rochelle Campus, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
Kenneth J. Doka, PhD, MDiv, Professor of Gerontology, CNR Graduate School, will join other noted panelists to discuss the topic, “When Grief is Complicated.” The panel will be moderated by Frank Sesno, Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University and former CNN anchor. The program is cosponsored by Riverside Memorial Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, and Whalen and Ball Funeral Home.
This year’s program examines the nature of complicated grief, which is a significant deviation from the typical grieving process, and how it can result in additional complications and dangers. Research shows that between 10 and 20 percent of those grieving experience more disabling reactions, including complicated grief triggered by the loss, PTSD, major depressive disorder, separation anxiety disorder, adjustment disorder, or substance abuse. “When Grief is Complicated” addresses how to identify these disabling grief reactions and when referrals to specially trained clinicians or professionals may be indicated. The program combines presentations by experts with video, discussion, and complimentary learning materials.
Each year this award-winning program is produced by Hospice Foundation of America, a not-for-profit organization, which acts as an advocate for the hospice concept of care through ongoing programs of professional education, public information, and research on issues relating to illness, loss, grief, and bereavement. The program is targeted to a range of practitioners including nurses, social workers, counselors, funeral directors, marriage and family therapists, and others.
