NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College Lacrosse team found little room to run against Canisius, falling 18-5 Saturday morning.
The Golden Griffs (7-4, 2-0) outshot the Gaels (3-8, 0-2) 30-18. The Maroon & Gold grabbed 13 of 24 controls and connected on three of 10 free position attempts. Iona committed 26 turnovers and were successful on 12 out of 20. clears.
On offense, senior Katelyn Noschese scored two goals and added an assist. Junior Jenna Tolzmann, senior Grace Celona and freshman Delaney Davidson each scored in the contest. In goal, freshman Samantha Tyo played the entirety, making two saves.
The Griffs found the scoreboard early, connecting with their first goal 38 seconds into the game. The lead lasted for seven minutes when Noschese intercepted an errant pass from the Canisius netminder and found an open Celona in front to knot the score at one. Canisius scored the next four goals in 2:30 to open up a 5-2 lead on the Gaels. With 17:39 to play, Tolzmann got on the board off a beautiful feed from the corner assisted by Celona. After another Canisius tally, Noschese brought Iona with a whip to the bottom left corner, cutting the Gael deficit to 6-3. Canisius ended the half scoring the next eight goals with the Gaels trailing the Golden Griffs 14-3 after 30 minutes.
The Gaels scored two of the first three goals in the second half with Noschese’s second of the game and followed by Davidson with 20 minutes remaining. Iona was held off the score sheet and allowed three goals in the remainder of the contest.
The Maroon & Gold return home on Wednesday, Apr. 5 to take on Quinnipiac at 3:00 PM.
