Japanese Music and Dance to be Presented at Library

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Japanese dance and music will be featured at the New Rochelle Public Library’s International Music and Dance series on Tuesday, July 18th at 7:00 pm. Admission is free and limited to the capacity of the library’s Ossie Davis Theater, on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 6:45 pm.  

Members of the Japanese Folk Dance Institute will introduce the vibrant culture, history and spirit of Japan through various traditional folk dances from all parts of Japan.  Under the direction of Momo Suzuki, the Minbuza dancers, in full costume, will perform such movements as the Lion Dance, the Cherry Blossoms Dance, fan dance from Ehime Prefecture, an umbrella dance from Tochigi and Gunma Prefecture, a flower hat dance from Yamagata Prefecture, and a Summer festival dance from Okinawa. 

The Minbuza dancers have participated in numerous school performances, community festivals, and many special events such as the Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Epcot Pavilion at Disney World in Florida.

The 2017 series will continue with Arabian Dance by Aszmara with Music of Armenia, Turkey and Egypt 

(July 25th), Bokandeye African Dance and Drum Troupe (August 1), and Calpulli Mexican Dance Company 

(Saturday, August 12 at 1:00 pm).
