NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Iona College men’s basketball head coach Tim Cluess added Tim Maloney as an assistant coach to the Gaels’ for this upcoming 2017-18 season. Maloney joins the Maroon & Gold after spending eight seasons with Scott Drew’s staff at Baylor University as director of basketball operations.
Maloney’s experience and feel for the game assisted the program in terms of developing strategy, analyzing game film, planning practices and team building. Additionally he had opportunity to assist in academics, game scheduling and recruiting both on campus and on the road. He was a solid ambassador for Baylor Basketball as both an inspirational speaker and life coach for the men’s program.
During his time at Baylor, Athletes in Action USA basketball recruited Maloney to lead two All Star men’s teams made up of Division 1 players from conferences across the country. The Conferences included the Big 12, SEC, Horizon, Big 10, Big South, ACC, Sun Belt, Missouri Valley, Mountain West, American, Atlantic Sun, Big East and the Southland. It was the third time Maloney was sought out for this opportunity as he led a team in 2007 while he was at UMass as the Associate Head Coach.
The AIA teams played against National and club teams in tournament play and televised National games though out Europe. The teams Maloney led had two undefeated tours, and finished as Champion of a tournament in Macedonia. In 2016, the National Basketball Federation of Kosovo sought Maloney out to be one of the coaches to help lead their National team in the countries first ever opportunity to compete in the FIBA National Championships of Europe.
Maloney, who is in has 21 years of experience in Division I college basketball, has been involved in 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and four NIT appearances. Included are two Elite Eight appearances, three Sweet 16 appearances and a Final Four, as well as two berths in the NIT championship game and an appearance in the NCAA national championship game and an NIT title.
The New York native has also previously worked at four other Division I programs. The institutions include UMass (2005-08; head coach Travis Ford), Eastern Kentucky (2004-05; head coach Travis Ford), Florida (1997-2003; head coach Billy Donovan) and Buffalo (1996-97; head coach Tim Cohane). Maloney has also worked at the Division II level as an assistant coach at Nyack and St. Thomas Aquinas.
Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, Maloney experienced national exposure in prep school basketball. Named head coach of Mariner High School in Cape Coral, FL in the summer of 1993, he took over a team that went 7-18 the previous season and turned the team around to the tune of an 18-7 mark, giving the school it’s best-ever record.
Maloney has also been recognized for his work as a “Life Coach,” most recently being featured in a New York Times article by Zach Schonbrun entitled “For the Court, a Head Coach. And for the Head Coach? A Life Coach“ Current South Carolina men’s basketball head coach Frank Martin mentioned Maloney during his NCAA Sweet 16 news conference and how much their friendship has meant to him.
A 1982 graduate of Manhattanville College, Maloney competed in basketball, baseball, soccer, and cross country. He earned “Most Dedicated Athlete” for his labors with the cross country program. Maloney earned his master’s degree in counseling from Hunter College in 2004. He and his wife Joanne have a son, Thomas Joseph (TJ).
