Two Injured as Man Struck Crossing North Avenue, Slammed into Windshield in Downtown New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A man was seriously injured in New Rochelle Saturday evening as he walked across the street with takeout food from a nearby restaurant. He was struck by a car near the crosswalk in front of 230 North Avenue. The man appears to have been making a delivery for Caridad & Louie Restaurant located in the 5 Anderson Building across the street from where the collision occurred.

Talk of the Sound obtained exclusive surveillance video from two angles showing the moment of impact linked above (warning: the video depicts graphic violence which some readers may find upsetting).

The video shows the man slowly walking across North Avenue, jaywalking. As he reaches the double-yellow line in the center of the roadway he pauses to let a Southbound car pass. He then continues to cross the Southbound lanes of North Avenue. A silver SUV in the right lane slows to allow the man to continue crossing, swerving slightly into the left lane to go around the man. Suddenly a car, traveling at what appears to be well above the posted speed limit of 30 m.p.h. swerves around the SUV, attempting to pass the SUV in the right lane, and plows full force into the man.

Bags of food are sent flying into the air as the man is squarely hit in both legs and thrown like a rag doll over the hood of the car into the windshield them tumbles head over heels across the roof of the car landing on the trunk of the car where he remains as the car swerves into the left lane, sideswiping the same SUV the driver had attempted to pass. The car travels more than 50 feet before coming to a stop in front of the driveway to the CVS parking lot.

The victim, still on the trunk of the car, attempts to sit up and get off the trunk of the car but is unable to do so, flopping back on the car where he remained motionless until paramedics responded to the scene.

The windshield of the vehicle which struck the victim was thoroughly smashed in across the entire front of the car.

The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in serious condition with injuries to both legs, according to police on the scene.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital.

No one in the SUV was injured, according to the driver of the second vehicle who spoke briefly with Talk of the Sound. The SUV suffered minor damage.

The front bumper of the car was covered what appeared to be red beans. There was what appeared to be a small amount of blood on the back of the car. Torn bags and smashed food containers littered a 20 foot section of North Avenue.

Police closed off the area in downtown New Rochelle for several hours as they conducted an accident investigation at the scene.

Police will make a determination on whether to file charges against the driver of the car after their investigation is complete.
