NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A trio of first half goals helped Stony Brook upend the Iona College women’s soccer team 3-0 this afternoon on Long Island during non-conference action.
The Seawolves (1-1) quickly put forth an attack in the early moments of Sunday’s matinee with a pair of goals in the first six minutes from Rachel Florenz. The rookie first got on the board in the second minute with a header off the corner kick from the right side by Christen Cahill. Florenz needed less than four minutes to notch her second tally of the day as the East Islip, NY native finished a feed from Jordyn Klapper.
Stony Brook pushed the margin to 3-0 before the halftime break with a penalty kick goal from Julie Johnstonbaugh in the 44th minute. The host finished the first 45 minutes with a 15-6 shot advantage while each team attempted two corner kicks. TIffany Martinez came up with five saves in the opening period for the Gaels (0-2).
Martinez pushed her save total to 14 by the end of the match with an additional nine stop in the second half as Stony Brook attempted 18 shots while yielding just one to the Maroon & Gold. Martinez’s effort helped keep the Seawolves off the board, however, the first half offense proved to be enough.
Christine Rebus put forth two shots on-goal for Iona while Mariana Jaramillo and Marisa Bentley each were credited with two shots with one coming on-target.
The Gaels return to the road on Thursday for a third straight away game to start the season, traveling to Philadelphia for a 6:00 pm non-conference tilt at La Salle. Following the contest at La Salle, Iona will host six straight games on Mazzella Field.
