NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The bricks of Trinity Elementary School have been livened up with mums, geraniums and begonias – flowers in bright yellow, red, pink and other colors – thanks to Aurelia Grosu.
Grosu has been a lunch monitor at the school since 2004, but she has been gardening all her life.
“I love to garden,” she said. “I said, ‘You know, I should do something for the school, and of course, for the children.'”
So, with some funds from the Trinity PTA, and some of her own, she has planted flowers along the strip in front of the school, the corner where the Trinity Elementary School sign that faces Pelham Road, and a triangular patch of earth on the Church Street side of the building. Grosu began the project in May 2016 and added to it over time. She visits the school on weekends to water the plants.
The Trinity PTA plans to add to the beautification effort in the spring with a project that will give students an opportunity to plant annuals that they bring in.
“The Trinity PTA wants all of our children to thrive in an environment of growth, beauty and care both inside of our walls and outside,” Trinity PTA President Diane Delgado said.
The bursts of color have been a well-appreciated addition to the school.
“It pops – it makes the space come alive,” said Principal Anthony DiCarlo. “It shows the kids that we care about the school. It makes the place feel welcoming. And it’s beautiful.”
