NEW ROCHELLE, NY — When school is out for February vacation, the New Rochelle Public Library is in full-swing with an array of free programs for students in Pre-K through Grade 5.

On Tuesday, February 20th, two Winter Craft Workshops will be held: from 10:30 am – 11:30 noon at the Huguenot Children’s Library and from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm, main library meeting room. Children will be guided in creating their own magical winter wonderland using air-drying clay. Registration is required at HCL: please call 632-8954. Seating is on a first come-first served, beginning at 12:45, in the meeting room of the main library.

The “Film for the Younger Set” on Wednesday, February 21st, from 10:30 am – 11:30 am, will be A Snowy Day and Other Great Stories. A handful of enchanting stories by Ezra Jack Keats are beautifully adapted as “moving storybooks” in this treasury of tales beginning with the Caldecott Medal winner, The Snowy Day. When Peter discovers a pristine world of white outside his window, his wondrous day unfolds with the simple pleasures of sticks, snow-laden trees, and snow angels. He appears in six more stories growing from a small boy in Whistle for Willie to adolescence in Pet Show! This movie is geared for children ages 3 – 7 years and takes place in the Ossie Davis Theater of the main library.

At 2:00 pm on Wednesday, February 21st, the popular entertainer Jim McClenahan takes the stage of the library’s Ossie Davis Theater for his hilarious “Magic and Comedy Show.” Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis, to the 140-seat capacity of the theater.

All ages are invited to meet author Barry Wittenstein on Thursday, February 22nd, at 1:00 pm in the meeting Room of the main library. The engaging, funny author of Waiting for Pumpsie, and The Boo-Boos That Changed the World: A True Story About an Accidental Invention (Really!) will be sharing his experiences as a children’s book author and his how his fascination with Band-Aids led to a book! Following the visit, everyone is invited to design their own giant Band-Aid, using a wide assortment of art supplies and creativity.

The Friday, February 23rd, “Live Performance for the Younger Set” will feature singer, songwriter & entertainer Zev Haber, from 10:30 am – 11:15 am. One of our favorite children’s performers, Zev returns for another upbeat performance of funny stories, silly songs, and rousing audience participation.

At 1:00 pm on the afternoon of Friday, February 23rd, The Secret World of Arrietty will be shown.

In this remake of the magical tale, The Borrowers, imagination comes to life with beautiful animation. In a secret world hidden beneath the floorboards, little people called Borrowers live quietly among us. But when tenacious and tiny Arrietty is discovered by Shawn, a human boy, their secret and forbidden friendship blossoms into an extraordinary, heartwarming adventure of friendship and courage. Featuring the voices of Disney Channel’s Bridgit Mendler and David Henrie and comedic all-stars Will Arnett, Amy Poehler and Carol Burnett, the film delights children and adults of all ages and adults. The movie is rated G and runs 95 minutes.
