NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New Rochelle High School varsity ice hockey team clinched a share of the League C title on Monday night after a decisive 9-0 win over White Plains High School. It is the team’s first league championship since the 2007-2008 season.
The Huguenots finished with a 3-1 league record with wins over Mount Pleasant, Horace Greeley and White Plains and now shares the title with Horace Greeley High School, who also finished with a 3-1 record.
There are no tiebreakers for league placement as they have no bearing on Section 1 playoff seeding, said Head Coach Paul Viggiano.
Junior Brandon Cimino, a Tier 1 hockey prospect – drafted last year by a U.S. Hockey League affiliate – and one of the area’s top players, led with six points (three goals and three assists) in the win; while junior Alex Herman shut out the White Plains Tigers after facing 19 shots.
The Huguenots are led by the following standouts: Cimino, defense; junior Nick Scollard, forward; senior and co-captain Alex Vasapolli, forward; junior David Benko, forward; senior and co-captain Steven Kroleski, forward; senior and co-captain KC Fullerton, forward; and Herman, goalie.
With two games remaining against Rye and Scarsdale, Viggiano said the Huguenots hope to finish strong before next week’s opening round of the playoffs on Feb. 16.
Both games will have a strong influence on the seeding, which takes place just a couple of nights before the opening round, Viggiano added.
