NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Sam Rosenberg and Evan Phillips, both 14 and freshmen at New Rochelle High School, organized and hosted this weekend’s third annual BE A GOOD COOKIE Lacrosse Tournament. This year the two raised more than $12,000, bringing the three-year total to $37,500 in support of children’s cancer research.
“We originally founded the tournament as a bar mitzvah project, but decided to keep it going because of how good it makes us feel to give back,” said Rosenberg. “Our goal before we graduate high school is to raise $100,000, because that’s how much money it takes to start a new clinical trial.”
“We knew we wanted to do something that would have a positive impact on kids,” continued Phillips. “With cancer being the number one cause of death by disease of children in the U.S., Cookies for Kids’ Cancer was a great fit for what we hope to achieve.”
The Sports Underdome in Mount Vernon, NY was filled with hundreds of families as 12 teams of 5th – 8th grade boys from lower Westchester and Greenwich competed in brackets named for cookie favorites – sugar and chocolate chip. A 6th grade team from Pelham, won the Sugar Cookie bracket. Larchmont/Mamaroneck Youth Lacrosse 7/8 team won the Chocolate Chip Cookie bracket.
All proceeds from the Be A Good Cookie Tournament will go to COOKIES FOR KIDS’ CANCER, a national 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to raising funds and awareness for research into less toxic, more effective treatments for childhood cancer, the leading disease killing children in the United States.
