NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Science Research students at New Rochelle High School continue to win accolades beyond the city limits, with two students winning awards in the Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair, and four attending the recent 33rd Annual Upstate Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at SUNY Albany.
Hundreds of students throughout Westchester and Putnam counties competed in the Science and Engineering Fair on March 17 at Sleepy Hollow High School. New Rochelle’s Jillian Stokes was one of the winners of the American Psychological Association Award for outstanding research in psychological science. Leora Segal, another NRHS student, won an Excellence in Medical Research Award for the top research projects in medicine and health, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, and neuroscience.
Segal was also one of the students who traveled to Albany for the symposium, along with Zahra Masih, Casandra Chen and Maura Kelly Yuoh. The event was sponsored by SUNY Albany, the Academy of Applied Science and the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force.
Masih, a senior, presented her research in cancer treatment demonstrating the extensive variability of human immune cells. The results are important for potential cures for cancerous inflammation.
The high school students chosen to present at the symposium are finalists from sub-regional forums. Of the hundreds of students who present their papers at these sub-regional forums, only a select number are chosen statewide to present at the Upstate NY JSHS in Albany.
