NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A dozen sophomores from the Science Research Program at New Rochelle High School entered the Westlake Science Fair recently. Seven came home with trophies.
With two students each finishing in first and third place and three more in second place, the team made a strong showing in a competition with 350 students. It took pace on June 2 at Westlake High School in Thornwood.
“It’s a great honor for our team and our program,” said teacher Jeff Wuebber. “Our success at this fair shows the increasing strength and fortitude of the students in our Science Research Program.”
In its seventh year, the Westlake Science Fair is open to first-year science research students. Each competitor spends about eight minutes discussing his or her project, in front of a poster created to illustrate their work. The student then takes questions from the judges.
The winners were:
First place: Jacob Egelberg, Biochemistry; Aaron Cohen, Earth & Physics.
Second place: Griffin Bates, Chemistry; Josh Berenbaum, Behavioral Sciences; Jonny Ecker, Molecular Biology.
Third place: Louis Dagobert, Engineering, Maura Kelly-Yuoh, Behavioral Sciences.
Other NRHS competitors were: Rawley Charron, Javier Hernandez, Liam McKay, Jade Rosado and Jack Schlamkowitz.
“It’s a great way to end our best year ever,” Wuebber said.
