Overnight Apartment Fire in Downtown New Rochelle Leaves 11 Homeless

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Thirteen people were taken to area hospitals after a first-floor apartment fire at 75 Centre Avenue, according to Fire Chief Andy Sandor.

A call came into the New Rochelle Fire Department at 2:15 A.M. The entire on-duty shift of 31 members worked the Centre Avenue fire.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke on arrival, said Sandor. Several people at windows in front of the building and on fire escapes.

Fire was found coming out of windows in the back left corner apartment in the building, down a narrow alleyway.

Fire Department rescued several people down fire escapes, also took people down in the bucket of the Tower Ladder.

All civilians safely evacuated. There were no firefighter injuries.

There are 19 apartments in the building. 11 people were displaced from 5 apartments which are unable to be re-occupied at this time. Red Cross was on scene to offer temporary housing assistance to those displaced by fire and smoke damage in their apartments.

Yonkers, Eastchester and Greenville covered the City under mutual-aid agreements.
