Mamaroneck Delays Start of School Until September 13

Written By: Robert Cox

Mamaroneck Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaps issued a statement Friday on the delayed opening of schools due to damage caused byTropical Depression Ida.

Due to the large amount of repair and restoration work that still needs to be done, we have made the decision to postpone the start of school until Monday, September 13 for all students. This should allow the time needed to ensure that all of our buildings are ready for students to begin the school year safely with optimal support and resources.

If remediation efforts progress as planned, we are hopeful staff can be let back into the buildings late next week. We expect teachers from Chatsworth, Murray, Hommocks, and MHS to be able to return on Thursday, September 9th and staff at Central and MAS to return on Friday, September 10th. We are planning to reschedule kindergarten meet and greet activities and voluntary school tours for sixth and ninth grade students for Friday, September 10th. School leaders will follow up with more detailed information over the next few days.

We will assess the progress of repair and restoration work Tuesday afternoon and provide updates to let you know that we are on track and on schedule. Given the scope of repairs and restoration, we could encounter unexpected problems that would force us to revise our timelines and expectations.

I want to express my appreciation and thanks to our maintenance, custodial, and trades staff, especially our electricians who continue to work under difficult conditions. There is plenty of work ahead, but we have a great team led by Director of Facilities Steve Brugge and experienced restoration partners who have worked in our buildings for over a decade.
