EDP Waving a Hammer and Knife at New Rochelle Motorists Taken to Hospital

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — On September 29th, 2021, at about 2:51pm, New Rochelle Police received multiple calls about a woman standing in the street on the South End of New Rochelle waving a hammer and a knife at cars passing by.

The New Rochelle Police Critical Incident Unit responded and found that the woman walked back into her apartment nearby, and was refusing to open the door. Officers in the Critical Incident Unit, being specially training in dealing with persons with mental health issues, recognized signs of this woman being in crisis. As officers began trying to have a dialogue with the woman to have her open the door, they also contacted members of the County Crisis team as well as personnel from Human Development Services of Westchester to assist.

The collaborative effort was successful and the woman was transported to a hospital for mental health treatment and counseling without injury to her or the officers.
