Former New Rochelle Schools Employee, Louis “Sloppy” Apicella, Arrested for Stealing from Costco

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Louis Apicella, age 45, of New Rochelle, NY was arrested November 19, 2021, by the New Rochelle Police and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Petit Larceny at the ShopRite in New Rochelle, NY.

The alleged theft reportedly involved stealing steaks from the ShopRite butcher shop. Police would only confirm the dollar amount was under $150.

Apicella appeared for arraignment in New Rochelle City Court on December 9th but given a new arraignment date of January 19, 2012, after Judge Matthew Costa recused himself from Apicella’s case.

“I can’t hear this matter,” said Judge Costa upon looking up after the name “Louis Apicella” was called by a court officer. After a brief sidebar with the attorneys handling the case, Costa said Apicella was “a friend of the family” who he has “known his whole life”, adding he had represented Apicella in the past.

Based on reported past associations with Apicella, Judge Jared Rice would likely recuse himself as well, leaving just Judge Eileen Songer McCarthy to hear the case or a transfer of the case to another jurisdiction.

Apicella first became known as “Sloppy” after New York State Police stopped him for failing to wear a seat belt as part of a Memorial Day Weekend “Buckle Up New York” Campaign.

Police found various quantities of illegal drugs — 37 grams of marijuana, 7.7 grams of marijuana, 1.3 grams of marijuana, 0.3 grams of marijuana (a total of 46.3 grams) and a 500 ml bottle of concentrated cannabis oil —strewn about the vehicle. He was arrested and his vehicle impounded. One law enforcement source, who ask not to be identified, describe Apicella as “a sloppy criminal.”

On August 18, 2011, Apicella threatened this reporter and my spouse at the Quaker Ridge Shopping Center.

Apicella is well-known to Talk of the Sound readers going back almost a decade.

  1. If he is hungry there’s always food available thanks to the hard work Daniel Bonnet. Maybe he is going through a tough time. Love thy neighbor.

    1. Heh! Louis is a stone-cold crook.

I think he would admit to drug-dealing, loan-sharking, and (as a CSDNR employee) time-theft. I am sure he is reading these comments so maybe he can jump in and explain to you that hunger is not the issue with him but an overweening sense of self-entitlement.

  2. You think steaks are the only thing Sloppy Lou steals? Try one of his $10 horrible cookies at one of his “operations “

  3. You think he’s stealing just at Costco? You should check out those crappy cookies he sells for $10 each.
