Following Arraignment in New Rochelle, Louis Apicella, a Former BOE Employee, Attempts to Run Over Journalist with Car

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle Police are investigating Louis Apicella, 45, of New Rochelle, NY, after he repeatedly harassed this reporter before and after Apicella’s arraignment in New Rochelle City Court on Wednesday.

Apicella first confronted Robert Cox in the criminal courtroom as the public was allowed entry shortly after 9:30 a.m. A friendly court officer asked Cox, “who are you here for today?” When Cox replied, “Apicella, Louis”. Apicella, who unbeknownst to Cox, was walking into the courtroom directly behind him, immediately became confrontational, blocking entry to the gallery, pushing his chest and aggressively demanding “why are you using my name” and “you got a problem with me”?

Cox reported Apicella’s behavior to the same court officer as Apicella backed off, walked away and sat down in the gallery.

During the arraignment before Judge Eileen Songer McCarthy, Apicella was chastised by the same court officer for standing before the judge with his hands in his pocket.

Apicella was released on his own recognizance and given a return date of January 26.

As Cox left the courtroom, Apicella came up behind Cox and closely followed Cox down a hallway, down a staircase, and out the front doors. Once outside, Cox switched on his iPhone camera and recorded Apicella leaving the courthouse, walking towards a black Cadillac sedan with white (possibly Connecticut) tags.

Moments later, as Cox walked along the sidewalk, down North Avenue, near the Lockwood Avenue intersection, Apicella, driving southbound on North Avenue, rolled down the window of the same Cadillac sedan and began yelling and gesticulating in a threatening manner. Wearing airpods, Cox could only vaguely make out threatening statements like “I’m going to get you” before Apicella continued driving towards downtown New Rochelle.

Moments after that, as Cox was walking in the crosswalk at Garden Street and North Avenue, Apicella attempted to strike Cox with the Cadillac, missing him by about one foot, before driving off.

Cox called the New Rochelle Police Department to report the incidents. NRPD Officers arrived moments later to take a report. A police investigation to review available CCTV video at the New Rochelle City Courthouse / New Rochelle Police Headquarters began soon after.

Apicella was arrested November 19, 2021, by the New Rochelle Police and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Petit Larceny at the ShopRite in New Rochelle, NY. He reportedly stole steaks from the ShopRite butcher.

Apicella appeared for arraignment in New Rochelle City Court on December 9th but given a new arraignment date of January 19, 2012, after Judge Matthew Costa recused himself from Apicella’s case.

“I can’t hear this matter,” said Judge Costa upon looking up after the name “Louis Apicella” was called by a court officer. After a brief sidebar with the attorneys handling the case, Costa said Apicella was “a friend of the family” who he has “known his whole life”, adding he had represented Apicella in the past.

On August 18, 2011, Apicella threatened this reporter and his spouse at the Quaker Ridge Shopping Center.

Apicella is well-known to Talk of the Sound readers going back almost a decade.

  1. How many chances do repeat thugs get? Surely this schmuck on wheels didn’t show up to court dressed in a hooded sweatshirt and sneakers. His next appearance might be in orange.

  2. Intimidating a reporter in a courtroom trying to BATTER him with his vehicle is putting YOLK all over Mr Apicellas face. He thinks he’s a tough cookie but he’s nothing more than a nilla wafer.

  3. What’s the next chapter for the story. We are waiting patiently for an update. He belongs incarcerated if this is all true. That’s just how the cookie crumbles.

  4. Yo you got no respect for my boy. Stalking him in cort because he forget to scan his flank steak. Saying ain’t right cookiepuss

  5. How this sloppy criminal isn’t behind bars yet is beyond me. I hope Sloppy Lou gets the help he desperately deserves before it’s too late.
