NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a former Educator in the Bronx, has been an active presence in New Rochelle since learning that Julian Oliveros, 16, of New Rochelle, died as a result of gunshot wounds.

Tommy Rivera, 16, of New Rochelle told New Rochelle police he shot Oliveros and was subsequently charged with Murder.

Bowman was first in New Rochelle on Wednesday, visiting the site of the shooting where a small memorial has been set up. He met with officials from the New Rochelle Board of Education and Mascaro Boys and Girls Club.

On Thursday, Bowman returned to the West End and met with students from the Boys and Girls Club who either witnessed the incident or were in close proximity.

On Monday, Bowman met with students at New Rochelle High School to help them process the incident.

“Our office is urging for the passage of HR8, and investments in opportunity for high risk youth so that they don’t pick up a gun,” said a Bowman spokesperson. “We’re also working to see if the Oliveros family needs any further support.”
