NEW ROCHELLE, NY (April 20, 2022) — Early this morning, New York Police Department Special Operations Unit rescued a man from a sinking boat off the shore of New Rochelle near David’s Island.

The man was not injured.

Rescue swimmers, safely deployed from a helicopter, quickly made contact with the boat operator and pulled him to safety using a Hi-Line.

A Hi-Line or Hi-Line/Heaving-in line is a weighted rope extension to a winch wire which is lowered down to a vessel. It is connected via a weak link to the aircraft’s winch hook. The receiving end of a Hi-Line has weights attached to it and the other end is attached to the helicopter winch hook. The helicopter crew member is winched onto the vessel then uses a rescue harness, or strop, to secure a person the boat. Both are then hoisted them above the vessel and lowered onto a nearby vessel.

The rescued boater was transferred to a nearby United States Coast Guard boat, then taken to shore.

The New York Police Department released video of the daring rescue at sea.
