A 52-year-old Man Drowned Tuesday in the Byram River (Port Chester/Greenwich)

PORT CHESTER, NY (August 13, 2022) — The man was swimming when he went under the water and never re-surfaced.

Why it matters: Every year in the United States there are an estimated 3,960 fatal unintentional drownings, an average of 11 drowning deaths per day.

Emergency response:

  • On Tuesday about 4:30 p.m. a caller to 911 reported a suspected drowning incident 30 minutes in the past area in the Byram River under the I-95 Bridge
  • The shoreline was searched by land, air and water resources
  • The search turned up negative
  • Victim was located in about 10 feet of water
  • Greenwich PD divers removed the victim
  • Victim was transported to the Port Chester side of the river
  • Victim was pronounced deceased at the scene

Identity of Victim: The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification to his family, who live in another country.
