Within 9 months rumors were swirling among leaders in the school community that he that he has plans to end his tenure in New Rochelle before the end of his first year. We asked Raymond to address the rumors in May 2022, 8 months ago.

“My wife and I love New Rochelle,” said Raymond in response to our inquiry from, saying he has “no plans on leaving.”

“There is much to do, and we are just getting started,” he added.

As we reported when Raymond was hired in 2021, he does not have an administrative certificate in New York State. Based on his leadership experience, including his work in California, he was eligible to obtain an administrative certificate for non-traditional Superintendent candidates.

The New York State Transitional D Program is described in further detail here.

The New York State Education Certificate Lookup Site describes his certificate as follows:

Certified by the State of New York solely for purposes of employment by the City School District of the City of New York and the operation of the School District.

UPDATE 2023-0111: As there has been speculation on his administrative certificate we asked Mr. Raymond about it. He replied moments ago. “I am enrolled in the transitional D program through the College of St Rose,” said Raymond. “My school district leader certification is in good standing.”

UPDATE 8:00 PM: The lawyers at Ingerman Smith, the District’s outside counsel, prepared a statement for New Rochelle Board of Education President William Iannuzzi:

January 10, 2023

As you may have read earlier today, Superintendent Jonathan Raymond indicated his last day in our district will be at the end of this school year. We would like to acknowledge and thank Mr. Raymond for his hard work and the significant contributions that he and his outstanding administrative team have made over the last 18 months. His abbreviated tenure was not anticipated, but we respect Mr. Raymond’s decision and understand his need to be closer to his family.

Identifying our next Superintendent is the Board of Education’s top priority and we are confident we will identify a candidate of the highest quality to succeed Mr. Raymond. The Board met to consider our options at this time and to discuss next steps. Please be assured that we are all committed to an inclusive, collaborative and open search. The Board believes we have a number of high quality candidates working for the District who have the skills and qualifications needed to assume this important role.

We will update the community with the details regarding this process, including our anticipated timeline at our next Board Meeting, Tuesday, January 24th.

Dear Colleague,

I am writing to you today to share that I have informed the Board of Education of my plans to resign as Superintendent of Schools, effective at the end of this school year. This decision is based on my need to return to the Boston area full time to support my family. While this was a very difficult decision for me to come to and comes sooner than I hoped, I believe it is the best decision for me and my family.

I have grown to love and appreciate this community and its rich and proud history. In our short time here, my wife and I have made good friends and hope to remain connected to New Rochelle. As your superintendent, I have been grateful to lead a community of dedicated educators and staff who have shown a willingness to support and trust new leadership and get behind a shared vision to support each and every child with the excellent education they all deserve.

We have much to do in the coming six months and during the remainder of my time I will be as focused as ever on the important work in front of us.

With deep gratitude,

Superintendent of Schools

Jonathan P. Raymond
