NEW ROCHELLE, NY (February 26, 2023) — Naisanagelly Sanchez had three court appearances this week: a Felony Hearing on February 22, 2023, in Yonkers City Court; on the morning of February 23, 2023, in New Rochelle City Court; and the afternoon of February 23, 2023, in the Opportunity Youth Part in New Rochelle City Court.

At the Yonkers Felony Hearing before Judge Arthur J. Doran, III on February 22, 2023, the open docket of Assault—2, a D Felony, (CR-04055-22; assaulting her mother) was reduced to Assault – 3, an A Misdemeanor and combined with a second docket, Assault—3, an A Misdemeanor (CR-04054-22, assaulting her mother’s boyfriend). Sanchez was arraigned on the reduced charge; and pleaded guilty to one count of Assault—3, an A Misdemeanor in full satisfaction of both dockets. She is due back for sentencing on July 10, 2023.

There was a sidebar discussion between the attorneys and Judge Doran, which indicated a negotiated plea deal might result in a sentence of 5 years of probation. She was given non-monetary bail conditions, ROR’d but remanded back to Westchester County Jail due to a “hold” from New Rochelle City Court.

Sanchez appeared in New Rochelle City Court on the morning of February 23, 2023, before Judge Jared R. Rice. She was released from custody at the Westchester County Jail to home confinement at a women’s shelter with an ankle monitor. The location was disclosed in open court, but we are not providing details of the shelter at this time.

Sanchez was 19 when she was arrested in November by New Rochelle Police and in June by Yonkers Police. She turned 20 while incarcerated in the Westchester County Jail.

Judge Rice reassigned her case out of “adult court” to the Opportunity Youth Part in New Rochelle City Court.

The Opportunity Youth Part (OYP) initiativewas launched in New Rochelle City Court in October 2020— links emerging adults facing misdemeanor or felony charges, ages 16 to 24, to local service providers who offer workforce development training and access to employment, academic assistance, behavioral health services, and mentors from the community. The Hon. Jared R. Rice presides over Opportunity Youth Part and oversees a weekly Thursday calendar that includes one hour of conferencing with service providers, attorneys and mentors, and a one-hour follow-up calendar with Opportunity Youth Part participants and their lawyers. The program takes a community-centric approach to adjudicating all matters and incorporates restorative justice and procedural fairness measures. Approximately 125 individuals have so far engaged with the program, which is the first Emerging Adult Justice initiative in the 9th Judicial District and a model for other communities.

Sanchez was given a return date of March 16, 2023, in New Rochelle City Court OYP.

Sanchez is scheduled for an SCI Conference on March 29, 2023, at 9:30 AM on the Assault—2 charge out of New Rochelle City Court.

Naisanagelly Sanchez has an appearance in Albany City Criminal Court at 10:00 am on March 1, 2023, before Hon. Holly A. Trexler on a Criminal Mischief—3 charge.

EDITOR’S NOTE: After the OYP appearance, Sanchez left New Rochelle City Court bundled up, hooded, and surrounded by her caseworker from CHOICE and what appeared to be a bodyguard. There were other unusual behaviors by CHOICE representatives at the courthouse on Thursday. We have raised our concerns to a CHOICE representative, but we are not reporting on that at this time.
