NEW ROCHELLE, NY (March 3, 2023) — Two firefighters were injured battling a structure fire in an unoccupied 4-story building on Main Street. There were no civilian injuries.

The building owner did not have building permits on file with the Building Department so it appears illegal work was being done

in building.

The call came in about 6:15 am this morning for smoke coming out of the building at 424 Main Street, said New Rochelle Fire Chief Andrew Sandor.

The call actually came in as 15 Franklin Avenue but NRFD members quickly determined the fire was at 424 Main Street.

Sandor said firefighters did searches throughout the unoccupied building. There were no civilian injuries.

The fire was in the basement and got in between the basement and the first floor. When firefighters arrived on scene there was smoke coming out of two sides of the building.

Main Street between North Avenue and Franklin Avenue was shut down for about an hour and a half.

The two injured firefighters — one smoke, one hip injury — went to the hospital for evaluation and treatment and are in stable condition.
