What is Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It is celebrated annually on June 19th and derives its name from combining “June” and “nineteenth”.
The holiday marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. This event came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million slaves living in Confederate states to be free.
