Virginia Man Busted for Drugs after posting signs on utility poles

RYE, NY (May 6, 2024) — A Virginia man was arrested on drug possession charges after police observed him posting signs on utility poles on Purchase Street.

On Friday April 5, 2024, Rye Police Officers observed two individuals on Purchase Street posting signs for a “public auction” promoting a chance to bid on luxury goods. Similar signs were posted all over the City of Rye.

When approached by police, neither party could produce any identification.

One of the perpetrators attempted to run from officers. After a brief foot pursuit the man was placed under arrest and transported along with his partner to Rye Police Headquarters.

During a subsequent search, a small black bag with nine green capsules containing suspected narcotics were discovered as well as a cap containing a white powdery substance also believed to be narcotics.

Arrest & Charges

Matthew Funkhouser, 43, of Virginia

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance – 7, a Violation
  • Obstruction of Governmental Administration
  • Resisting Arrest

Funkhouser was released on his own recognizance with a return court date of April 16, at 9:30 am.

The second party was issued a City Code

for Posting Handbills and also released.
