WASHINGTON, DC (December 23, 2024) — President-elect Donald Trump has named Emil Michael, a seasoned technology executive with a notable history in both the private sector and government, as the Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering.
Michael, who graduated from New Rochelle High School in 1989 where he served as the Model Congress Chairman, went on to earn a degree from Harvard University. He further enhanced his academic credentials with a law degree from Stanford. His parents still reside in New Rochelle, New York.
His career spans significant roles in the tech industry, including serving as Chief Business Officer at Uber, where he was instrumental in expanding the company’s global reach. Prior to Uber, Michael was the Chief Operating Officer at Klout, and he also held the position of Senior Vice President of Field Operations at Tellme Networks. His public service includes a stint as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense during his time as a White House Fellow.
Trump highlighted Michael’s background in his announcement, stating, “Emil has lived the American Dream by building several successful Tech companies, including Uber. He served as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense when he was a White House Fellow.” Trump emphasized Michael’s role in ensuring that the U.S. military remains at the forefront of technological advancement, while also focusing on cost-efficiency for taxpayers.
The nomination comes as part of a broader slate of what Trump described as “America First Patriots,” who will work alongside his nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth. Michael expressed his gratitude on social media, saying, “I couldn’t be more grateful for @realDonaldTrump’s nomination to serve our nation as Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. It is a dream come true and I can’t wait to get started as part of @PeteHegseth’s leadership team. Our best days are yet to come!”
Michael’s appointment is seen as a move to leverage his extensive experience in technology to modernize military capabilities, a priority for the incoming administration. His nomination will now move to the Senate for confirmation.
This announcement follows Trump’s promise to appoint individuals who will prioritize American interests and technological superiority in the defense sector.
