WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY (March 10, 2026) — The Westchester County Police Department announced the death of retired explosives detection canine Ellwood, who served the department and the Westchester County law enforcement community from 2013 to 2021.
In a statement, the department said, “Sad news to report from our Canine Unit: the passing of retired explosives detection canine Ellwood.”
Ellwood worked with handler Detective James O’Meara, who is now retired. The department extended condolences to O’Meara following the dog’s passing.
During their years of service, Ellwood and O’Meara conducted security sweeps across Westchester County, including at the Westchester County Airport. The department said the pair helped ensure the safety of travelers and multiple dignitaries.
The canine team also assisted several organizations, including the United States Secret Service, the United States Department of State, Naval Security Forces and local police departments.
“With appreciation and respect, we remember Ellwood’s service and many contributions to keeping Westchester safe,” the department said.
