NEW ROCHELLE, NY (March 22, 2026) — The New Rochelle Police Department announced that moped and electric scooter enforcement will take place from Monday, March 23 through Friday, March 27, targeting illegal operation, unregistered vehicles, and unsafe driving behaviors on several city streets.
According to the department, enforcement will focus on Main Street from Maple Avenue to Harrison Street, and North Avenue from Huguenot Street to Bonnefoy Place, as well as from Sickles Avenue to Huguenot Street.
Police said the initiative targets “illegal operation, unregistered vehicles, unsafe driving behaviors, double parking, and misuse of roadways by electric scooters and bicycles.”
Officers will also be enforcing a new law related to electric scooters. The department stated that scooters must have a visible manufacturer’s label showing maximum speed, motor wattage and capacity. “If that label is missing, the scooter is not considered legal to operate on public roads,” police said.
The department added that scooters capable of speeds over 20 mph do not qualify as electric scooters under the law and are instead treated as limited-use motorcycles, requiring proper registration and operation by a licensed driver.
“Scooters that are unregistered, improperly labeled, or operated by unlicensed drivers are subject to summonses and may be towed or impounded,” police said.
The enforcement effort aims to “reduce traffic hazards, improve roadway safety, and address ongoing issues related to congestion and unsafe operation,” with officers also enforcing parking and traffic violations throughout the campaign period.
