WHITE PLAINS, NY (March 30, 2026) — Westchester County is celebrating Earth Month by hosting three free compost giveaway events for residents. The events are designed to encourage food scrap recycling and highlight the environmental benefits of composting.
Residents can receive free compost produced at the County’s CompostED site, which processes up to two tons of food scraps weekly. In addition, the County is launching its spring 2026 Community Compost Bin and Rain Barrel Sale, offering items at reduced prices to promote sustainable practices.
The giveaway events are scheduled for Saturday, April 11, at Wilson’s Woods Park, Mt. Vernon, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Tuesday, April 21, at Glen Island Park, New Rochelle, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and Tuesday, April 28, at Sprout Brook DEF Facility, Cortlandt Manor, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Registration and Purchases
Due to limited compost quantities, residents must register online for a specific time slot to receive compost. Each registered resident will receive two 1-cubic-foot bags of compost, with DEF staff on-site to verify registration and load compost into vehicles.
