MAMARONECK, NY (April 6, 2026) — A Bronx man was criminally charged and released on his own recognizance following his arrest in connection with a counterfeit currency case that escalated into a police pursuit at a CVS on Mamaroneck Avenue, according to the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department.
Police said the case began March 10, 2026, when officers responded to the CVS at 805 Mamaroneck Ave. for a report of two individuals attempting to pass counterfeit currency. Upon arrival, officers observed two male suspects exiting the store and entering a gray Nissan sedan.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver intentionally struck a marked police vehicle and fled the scene at a high rate of speed. The pursuit was terminated in the interest of public safety, police said.
Detectives continued the investigation by reviewing surveillance footage, analyzing license plate information, and coordinating with outside law enforcement agencies. The vehicle was traced to a recent dealership purchase, providing investigators with critical leads.
Further investigation, including database analysis and coordination with probation authorities, led to the identification of one suspect as Shakir S. Cole, 36, of the Bronx. Police said investigators also determined the suspect had prior involvement in counterfeit currency-related incidents.
On March 31, 2026, members of the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department responded to Bronx County Probation, where Cole was taken into custody without incident during a scheduled probation appointment. He was transported to Village of Mamaroneck Police Headquarters for processing.
Cole was criminally charged, processed, and released on his own recognizance following arraignment. He is scheduled to appear in the Village of Mamaroneck Court on April 16, 2026.
Police said the investigation reflects the department’s commitment to investigative work, officer safety, and collaboration with partner agencies.
