Westchester County Police, Fire and EMS Agencies Conduct Full-Scale Airline Crash Drill at Playland

RYE, N.Y. (April 25, 2026) — Members of the Westchester County Police Department’s Special Operations Division participated in a full-scale emergency exercise at Playland that simulated a police, fire and EMS response to a commercial airline crash into the reservoir near Westchester County Airport.

The exercise allowed police and fire agencies to deploy water-borne resources into the lake to conduct rescues and bring simulated victims to shore for medical care. To ensure safety, mannequins were placed in the lake to be rescued while actors portraying victims were used on shore for EMS personnel to assess, treat and transport from the scene.

The drill is part of Westchester County Airport’s (HPN) required Full-Scale exercise, which is conducted once every three years under Federal Aviation Administration regulations.

The Westchester County Airport Operations, the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services and the WCPD coordinated planning and execution of the exercise. Multiple police, fire and EMS agencies participated in the training.
