NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (May 8, 2026) — A former New Rochelle teacher was extradited from Louisiana and taken into custody Wednesday on felony criminal contempt charges, the New Rochelle Police Department announced.
Samuel McVey, 47, of Briarcliff Manor, a former teacher at Isaac E. Young Middle School in New Rochelle, was stopped by Baton Rouge Police Department officers on May 7, 2026, and arrested on a fully extraditable warrant for Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree. Court records show charges against McVey were subsequently upgraded to include Criminal Contempt in the First Degree, a felony, which is fully extraditable under New York law. He was transported back to New York State on May 7, 2026, without incident through the collaborative efforts of the New Rochelle Police Department and the Westchester County Police Warrant/Fugitive Unit.
McVey, who was a probationary Spanish teacher at Isaac E. Young Middle School, was notified in January 2026 that Superintendent Corey W. Reynolds intended to recommend his termination to the Board of Education. In early February, according to a misdemeanor information filed in New Rochelle City Court, McVey sent emails to a school official stating he was “coming to the building with guns” and that “we have a bullet for Corey’s head.” An arrest warrant was issued on Feb. 9, but McVey was not located until March 17, when he was taken into custody at his parents’ house and arraigned in New Rochelle City Court on a misdemeanor charge of aggravated harassment. He was released on non-monetary conditions, including an order to surrender his passport, which he did not comply with. McVey subsequently traveled to Colombia, where Colombian National Police took him into protective custody at José María Córdova International Airport in Rionegro on April 8 after responding to citizen reports and what authorities described as “behavior contrary to public coexistence,” according to a written response from airport police commander Capt. Ana María Hernández Giraldo. He was transferred to a holding facility in Rionegro before being escorted to the airport gate and placed on a flight to Miami, according to sources familiar with the matter. McVey confirmed to Talk of the Sound that he arrived in Miami. At Miami’s airport, U.S. Customs and Border Protection initially detained him, but released him because the outstanding warrant was based on a misdemeanor charge, according to sources familiar with the matter. Over the following weeks, prosecutors upgraded the charges to include Criminal Contempt in the First Degree, a felony, triggering a nationwide warrant. He was arrested by Baton Rouge police on April 24 and extradited to New Rochelle on May 7.
The case has a lengthy court history. McVey was first arraigned in New Rochelle City Court on Feb. 9, 2026, and a temporary order of protection was issued. He was arraigned again on March 17, pled not guilty, and was released on non-monetary conditions. A bench warrant was issued on March 26 after he failed to appear in court. Court records show he also faces a separate charge of Bail Jumping in the Third Degree.
Upon his return, McVey was charged with multiple counts of misdemeanor and felony Criminal Contempt and Aggravated Harassment, according to the New Rochelle Police Department. He is currently awaiting arraignment.
McVey faces the following charges under New York State Penal Law:
• Criminal Contempt 1st Degree (2 counts) — E Felony (PL §215.51)
• Criminal Contempt 2nd Degree (5 counts) — A Misdemeanor (PL §215.50)
• Aggravated Harassment 2nd Degree (5 counts) — A Misdemeanor (PL §240.30)
• Bail Jumping 3rd Degree (1 count) — A Misdemeanor (PL §215.55)
UPDATE: Court records show McVey was arraigned this morning in New Rochelle City Court on a charge of Bail Jumping in the Third Degree, and a temporary order of protection was issued.
The New Rochelle Police Department credited the Baton Rouge Police Department and the Westchester County Police Warrant/Fugitive Unit for their assistance in apprehending McVey.
