New Rochelle High School Celebrates 21 Student-Athletes’ College Commitments

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (May 14, 2026) — New Rochelle High School honored 21 graduating seniors who have committed to playing their sports at various colleges across the nation. The ceremony, held in the NRHS gymnasium, celebrated the students’ achievements as they signed commitment letters and posed for photos.

Among the honorees, Stella Ziogas, a basketball player, is headed to Siena University on a full scholarship. Alexander Suhanitski, the 2025 New York State Singles Tennis Champion, will attend the University of Notre Dame on a partial scholarship. Samuel Cave, who set a new school record in swimming, received a partial scholarship to American University.

Geronimo “Jero” Velasquez made history as New Rochelle’s first soccer player to win Section 1 Player of the Year and was named an All-American. Sophia Ochoa gained recognition in track and field with a ranking of third All-Time in Westchester County.

“Our coaches and teachers could not be prouder,” said Athletic Director Joe Donaldson. “We wish them continued success as they take the next step in their athletic and academic careers.”

NRHS Principal Dagoberto Artiles emphasized the importance of education alongside athletics, saying, “These young men and women have incredible athletic talent, but also leave us with the knowledge and skills that will help them succeed.”
