NEW ROCHELLE, NY (May 17, 2026) — The New Rochelle Police Department announced it has dedicated a police boat in honor of former Detective Mark S. Gado, describing the ceremony as part of a longstanding law enforcement tradition recognizing fallen officers.
In a statement posted by the department, officials said the dedication honored “a life dedicated to service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the people of New Rochelle.”
According to the department, Gado was appointed to the New Rochelle Police Department on May 2, 1977, and retired honorably on Feb. 7, 2006.
Police said Gado spent most of his career assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division, where he was “recognized as an exceptional investigator.”
The department said Gado received numerous honors during his career, including the Police Commissioner’s Award, 16 Class “C” Citations, four Commendations, and the Arthur Luce Klein Award.
Police said Gado died Sept. 16, 2018, following what the department described as “a long and courageous battle with a 9/11-related illness.” The department stated that because of his service at Ground Zero, his death “has been recognized as a 9/11 line-of-duty death.”
The department thanked attendees who participated in the memorial and dedication ceremony, stating that their presence “meant a great deal to the Department, the Gado family, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.”
Police said the dedication ensures Gado’s “name lives on — not only in memory, but through continued service on the waters of New Rochelle.”
