NEW ROCHELLE, NY (May 28, 2026) — A New Rochelle High School teacher said her final “En Plein Air” event began with her becoming trapped in an elevator for 40 minutes before being rescued by a former student who is now a firefighter.
Brock is retiring after 35 years of service.
Alexandra Rutsch Brock wrote on Facebook, “My last En Plein Air started off with getting stuck in the elevator for 40 min this morning!”

Brock said “Joe,” a student from her first year teaching in 1991, was among the firefighters who responded (NRFD Lieutenant Joseph Renda).
“My student Joe from my first year teaching in 1991 was the fireman that rescued us on my last year teaching — FULL CIRCLE MOMENT for sure!” Brock wrote.

The post included photographs showing show students inside the elevator with art supplies and firefighters responding at the scene.
