Larchmont Halts Flint Park Fields Project After Waste Discovery

Written By: Talk of the Sound News

LARCHMONT, NY (August 19, 2026) — The Village of Larchmont’s ambitious rehabilitation project for Flint Park fields A & B has been halted following the discovery of municipal solid waste in one localized area.

The project, initially expected to be completed for the fall season, aimed to enhance the fields’ condition, drainage, and playability through a reinforced natural turf system and updated stormwater collection system. Environmental testing done prior to construction showed conditions consistent with urban fill, but no waste indicators were found at that time. However, on August 19, municipal solid waste was uncovered during the installation of a stormwater manhole.

NYSDEC officials arrived the same day, resulting in an immediate work stoppage. The area remains secured, with soils covered to minimize exposure. The Village, in coordination with its consultant, is monitoring erosion and sediment control, and has stockpiled the discovered material for further environmental testing. Additional test pits are proposed to ensure no further waste is present before stormwater connections are completed.

“We will resume the project once that guidance is in place,” the Village stated, emphasizing a commitment to completing the project responsibly while protecting public health and the environment. The Village will continue to update the public as new information becomes available.
