Valhalla Highlights Lithium Ion Battery Safety During Fire Prevention Week

VALHALLA, NY (October 2, 2026) — As Fire Prevention Week begins, Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins and the Department of Emergency Services are focusing on the dangers of improperly using lithium ion batteries.

Jenkins emphasized the theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety,” underscoring the importance of safely using, storing, and charging devices powered by these batteries. “Westchester has seen its share of serious fires caused by lithium ion batteries when the proper precautions were not taken,” Jenkins said.

Emergency Services Commissioner Susan Spear noted that lithium ion batteries are found in many everyday devices, from cell phones to e-bikes. She provided safety tips, such as avoiding charging on soft surfaces and using only the charger provided with the device.

Spear stressed the importance of stopping the use of any battery showing unusual signs like odor or leakage. “If you can do so safely, unplug the device if it is charging, move the device away from anything flammable and call 911,” she said.

Douglas Stiller, chief of special operations at DES, explained that fires occur through a process known as thermal runaway, which can cause batteries to explode and emit toxic gases. “If thermal runaway occurs, you need to leave that area as fast as possible,” Stiller advised.

Residents are encouraged to attend local fire department open houses for more information on preventing fires. Additionally, first deputy commissioner Louis Vetrone reminded residents to dispose of lithium ion batteries at designated facilities and not with household trash.
