NEW ROCHELLE, NY (October 25, 2026) — New Rochelle police have confirmed that a 48-year-old man died by suicide Friday evening at the Leaf Building, a residential high-rise at 500 Main Street in downtown New Rochelle.
Captain J. Collins Coyne of the New Rochelle Police Department confirmed the death in response to an inquiry from Talk of the Sound, which first reported the incident Friday evening. The man was a resident of the building, and detectives investigating the incident found no indication that anyone else was involved.
“Detectives responded and all current facts indicate the person was alone and chose to take this action,” Coyne said.

Emergency personnel responded to the building Friday, October 23, after the man fell from a balcony on an upper floor of the residential tower. The man landed on a terrace several floors above street level, where police officers and other emergency responders converged.
Initial reporting by Talk of the Sound indicated the fall originated near the 24th floor. Photographs from the scene showed New Rochelle police officers responding to the terrace and emergency medical personnel attending to the incident.
The man’s identity has not been released in the information provided by police.
Coyne expressed the department’s condolences to the family and emphasized that assistance is available to people experiencing mental health emergencies.
“The New Rochelle Police Department wants people to know that if they or someone they know are experiencing a crisis or suicidal thoughts, they can contact their local police department or call 911, and/or the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 988,” Coyne said.
Coyne also noted that the New Rochelle Police Department operates a Mobile Crisis Response Team capable of responding to people experiencing a crisis 24 hours a day.
The police statement provides the first official confirmation of the circumstances surrounding the incident, which Talk of the Sound initially reported as a serious fall while emergency responders were still at the scene.
Mental Health Resources: Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or suicidal thoughts can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. In New Rochelle, residents can also contact police or call 911 for emergency assistance.
