MAMARONECK, NY (October 26, 2026) — Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Sharon Torres is altering Monday’s Board of Trustees meeting schedule to accommodate parents who want to discuss pedestrian safety after a 9-year-old boy was struck by a car at a village intersection last week.
Torres announced the changes following an outpouring of concern from residents about the incident at Halstead Avenue and North Barry Avenue. Recognizing that the regularly scheduled evening meeting runs late for families with young children, Torres moved the discussion to an earlier work session and arranged for parents to address village officials.
A News 12 report said the boy was struck shortly before 1:45 p.m. last week while crossing at Halstead and North Barry avenues. Police said the child was taken to Westchester Medical Center but did not appear to have suffered serious injuries. The driver was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
In a message to residents, Torres acknowledged the concerns expressed to the Board of Trustees and outlined several changes intended to make the meeting more accessible to parents.
“Thank you to all of the concerned residents who reached out to the Board regarding the accident at the intersection of Halstead Avenue and North Barry Avenue on Thursday,” Torres wrote. “Your emails are being read and the Board and Village Staff share your concerns.”
The discussion has been added as the final item on the work session agenda, which Torres said begins at 5:15 p.m. Torres estimated the pedestrian safety discussion would begin between 6 and 6:30 p.m. and said the work session would end by 7:30 p.m., allowing parents time to attend and return home earlier. Residents will have an opportunity to speak following presentations from the Police Department and the assistant village manager.
Torres cautioned that speakers may face time limits because of the anticipated attendance and that village staff would not be able to answer individual questions during the meeting. She said unanswered questions would be tracked, with responses provided through the village website, social media, email and future meetings.
The mayor also offered to meet separately this week with groups of parents living near the intersection, providing an opportunity for more extensive discussions without the time restrictions imposed at public meetings.
The meeting will be held in the Village Courtroom at 169 Mount Pleasant Ave. in Mamaroneck. Residents unable to attend can watch the meeting live on LMC Media or submit comments by email to MayorandBoard@vomny.org.
The concerns come against the backdrop of a devastating pedestrian accident in Mamaroneck on June 20, 2024, when a 6-year-old kindergarten student and his 43-year-old mother were killed after being struck by a school bus while crossing Mamaroneck Avenue near New Street. Police said the mother and child were in a crosswalk and had the pedestrian walk signal when the bus turned left and struck them. The boy died at the scene, while his mother later died at a hospital.
That tragedy brought widespread grief to the Mamaroneck community and heightened attention to pedestrian safety around schools and busy intersections. Although Torres did not directly reference the 2024 deaths in her latest communication, the fatal accident remains part of the community’s recent history as residents confront another incident involving a young pedestrian.
In her message, Torres said the village is developing a $4 million project to improve Halstead Avenue, with the intersection at North Barry Avenue identified as the priority. She said the project has reached 60% design completion and includes many of the improvements residents have requested.
“Unfortunately changing the technology at the intersection is not a fix that can be done right away,” Torres wrote. “We need this properly designed to adequately improve safety.”
Torres said the village would continue providing updates on the project and encouraged residents to remain involved. Parents and other concerned residents can request inclusion on an email list devoted specifically to the Halstead Avenue improvements.
