Transportationally Challeged: Bus Companies Struggle to Get New Rochelle Students to School on Time

Today was a rough day for the Transportation Department at the City School District of New Rochelle as many parents called to try and resolve transportation issues. Kids left at bus stops waiting for busses that never arrived. Busses arrived late to school in the morning and after school programs in the afternoon. Folks at the City School District of New Rochelle Transportation Department had their hands full.

Last year NRCP reported on other struggles the Transportation Department seems to have done better this year. You can read that story here: New Rochelle Fails to Inform Parents of Transportation/School Bus Schedules

As many readers know, members of the City School District of New Rochelle Board of Education, Administration, Teachers and Staff often visit Talk of the Sound to get “feedback” on their job performance. Share your story, people are reading.

  1. Its amazing how inept the
Its amazing how inept the Transportation Dept. is. They denied my daughter busing because they claim we live within 1.5 miles from the school, however you can’t drive to the school in less than 1.5 miles unless to drive down 1 way streets the wrong way. The Transportation Dept. say its based on walking distance, but the routes they want my daughter to walk are pretty dangerous. I cannot imagine what they’re thinking.

BTW, this has to do with the Kaleidoscope Progam’s move to Webster School. I’ve heard there are other busing disaster stories out there for some of the other Kaleidoscope kids; such as living 10 minutes away, yet the bus takes 1 1/2 hours.

I can actually envision the Transportatation Dept. reversing their stance and granting her busing and us not using it because they’re going to make it so inconvenient, by making the drop-off/pick-ups too early or late or putting the bus stop somewhere ridiculous, that we won’t even use the service.

Overall I’d give Jeff Korostoff a C becasue he did listen at the begining, but now won’t even return a phone call or email and I’d give John Quinn, who apparently heads the Transportation Dept., an F because he hasn’t done anything.

Its just infuriating that my school tax bill will be hear in a week or 2 and I can’t even get busing for my daughter. And this wasn’t the only busing issue this year. My wife and I had to fight them tooth and nail to get my other daughter, who’s in K, to be pick-up in front of the house instead of down at the corner where no other kids were being picked-up. To do this, all the driver has to do is go aroung the block the other direction. The milage difference couldn’t have been more than .1 of a mile.

Just more reasons that I’ll NEVER vote for a school budget in New Rochelle. I hope others will join me.

    1. Now Your Catching on – Good for You
Your last sentence speaks to the begining of real reform . The only way we’ll ever get their attention is when we affect their ability to needlessly squander our money . We also had bussing issues that related to them selectively applying their own policy . Mealy mouthed ,weasels who act as if you should beg to get what your entitled to . Remember next year , don’t vote for the budget .

  2. We waited for the bus that never came
I waited and waited and the bus never arrived. Later that afternoon I saw the bus my child was supposed to ride on and asked the driver: what happened? The driver said he went by the stop and no children were at the bus stop. That was a lie. As a matter of fact I took pictures of my kids at the corner with my handy dandy iPhone 15 minutes before the bus was supposed to arrive. The neat thing about the iPhone is that it logs the time/date the picture was taken as well as the location using GPS technology. But of course the driver did not know that when he was fibbing. Not a good way to ease the first day of school jitters in a child. Lets see if they get it right today.
