Legislator Maisano Helps Secure Funding for Glen Island Bridge Repairs

Legislator Jim Maisano (R, New Rochelle), along with his colleagues on the Board of Legislators, approved a bond issue to secure $1.2 million for emergency repairs to the Glen Island Bridge. This bascule bridge, which is a type of drawbridge, is the only means of access to Glen Island Park. The operation of the bridge is mandated by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The $1.2 million will be used to complete the first phase of a complete rehabilitation of the bridge. Some of the repairs that will be completed with the bond funds are repairs to the sidewalks and curbs, structural steel work on the curb supports, and rail and other supports for the bridge.

The Glen Island Bridge is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and efforts to adhere to the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties will be mandated for these exterior improvements.

Legislator James Maisano said, “Glen Island Park is one of the jewels of New Rochelle and indeed all of Westchester County. It is one of our model parks. Many thousands of cars and pedestrians use the bridge every year. Its safety and reliable operations are essential, and these funds will allow us to make necessary improvements that will ensure the bridge is in good shape for the next twenty years.”
