Copper Thieves Strike in New Rochelle

CopperThievesA pair of burglaries were reported yesterday to New Rochelle Police, both involving thieves breaking into homes to steal copper pipes.

At about 6 a.m. a resident in a multi-family house at 73 Warren Street in New Rochelle, NY was awakened by a loud noise that sounded like pipe bursting. The resident went to investigate and observed two suspects, both male/black, running out the front door. The pair got into a blue van and drove north on Warren. The resident found that copper pipes had been cut from the boiler and water was pouring out, flooding the basement. The thieves entered from a kitchen window. The incident was reported at 8:15 am and occurred between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

At about 10:30 a.m., a real estate agent representing a property owner of a house on Hamilton Avenue reported that copper piping from basement laundry room taken. The theft may have taken place between May 25th and May 29th or more recently.

“We have had from time to time people stealing copper, vacant house, leader pipes and gutters, homes under construction, has some value on stolen property market,” said Detective Captain Joseph Schaller.
